Although music is fun, people love it, and it may seem like a good idea, adding music to your small business’s website probably isn’t a good idea. Here are five reasons why:
- Copyright Infringement. Unless you own the rights to the music, have written permission, or are paying royalties, you’re going to run the risk of being sued for copyright infringement!
- Customer Experience. A lot of people are just like us. They’re browsing them web or getting some work done and are listening to music at the same time. If they come across your site and they’re already listening to music, both soundtracks will collide into a horrible sounding mess. Potential customers may quickly leave your site to get on with their favorite song.
- Customer Experience Some More. Let’s say somebody WAS listening to music, but accidentally left the speakers wide open. As soon as they hit your site with music, they’re going to be blasted away, and it’s much easier to hit the back button and leave your site than it is to go down and hit the volume control.
- Slow Download Times. Not everybody has that super fast Internet connection that you do. Music takes time to download, which means it’ll take longer for your site to load.
- Different Tastes. Not everybody may like what you like. Some songs may annoy some and offend others. Keep it professional and make sure your site appeals to everyone with your target audience.
Have you had a bad experience with music on a website? Or maybe an awesome experience and you think I’m completely wrong? Tell us about it in the comments!
